While Metacritic has already offered a first review of the worst video games in 2021, there are also the first observations related to the great successes of the last twelve months.
Christopher Dring, of the international editorial staff of Games Industry, offers in particular some anticipations on the European market. Thanks to the first processing of data collected by GSD, a wide domain of Nintendo Switch emerges in the Old Continent. The hybrid console seems to have beaten all hardware competitors here, including the very requested PlayStation 5. The latter, Dring acknowledges, could have actually conquered the summit, had it not been for the continuous supply problems that are afflicting the next gen. In all, PS5 is still the most sold console in Britain, but also in smaller markets such as Sweden, Denmark and Finland. Compared to 2020, Nintendo Switch experienced a decrease in sales in Europe of around 12%, but despite this, it was a “great” year for the hybrid console.
On the software front, there seems to be no doubt: FIFA 22 is starting to occupy the first step of the podium among the best-selling games of 2021. Despite the controversy, until now the game EA has also achieved better results than the previous FIFA 21. The European Top 10, Dring continues, has only two new productions, Call of Duty: Vanguard and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury. Nothing to do for Pokémon Shining Diamond and Pokémon Splendid Pearl, which would however be in the standings if they were considered together as one title. Out of the top ten positions also Far Cry 6, which however could recover in extremes with the last weeks of 2021.
In sharing GSD data, Dring then emphasized some interesting observations. For example, it is learned that the success of Farming Simulator 22 has led the game to overcome titles like Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, Forza Horizon The crown of the year’s best new IP goes to It Takes Two, which for example has knocked Outriders. Outside the Top 10 of Nintendo Switch we find Metroid Dread, which stops in 23rd position. On the PS5 front, Resident Evil: Village conquers the fifth step of the podium, whose peak is dominated by FIFA 22. By combining – for necessity – the sales of Xbox One and Xbox Series X Plus, on top of the green crossed podium we find finally FIFA 22, while Force Horizon 5 is in fifth position.
