In addition to revealing that Lord of the Rings influenced Elden Ring, Hidetaka Miyazaki has focused on Godfrey’s heroic character, a legend of the past conceived and written by George R.R. Martin
Miyazaki specified that, after concluding to write the mythology of Elden Ring, Martin was commissioned to write the story of dramatic heroes who lived in the past of Interregno. Among these, Godfrey is represented on the cover of the new issue of EDGE, which you can look at at the bottom.
“During discussions with George Martin, we had themes and ideas to create bosses’ artwork and for the central characters of history. And when he finished writing the myths, we asked him to create these dramatic heroes of an ancient myth that takes place before the events of the game. These were not present in our previous titles, so it is something that really fascinated me: to think about the way it would represent the mystical and heroic qualities of those characters. And Godfrey is kind of a kind of incarnation of this concept. He is one of the most important characters in the game.
In the period of greatest splendor of the Golden Order of the Interregno there were two Elden Lords, and Godfrey was the first of these. He was married to the eternal queen Marika, and represents everything that is great of the Ancestral Ring and Interregno. In the end, however, he was exiled from the Interregno. He himself became Senzaluce and shares this deep connection with the Tarnished, the character played by the player. Godfrey is the embodiment of their long history and struggle: something that shone with a burning spark and has now fallen into disgrace.”
Elden Ring will be released on February 25, 2022 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X Plus, PS4 and Xbox One. During the same interview, Miyazaki stated that Elden Ring will be the best game of FromSoftware.
