The film was nominated for the Palm d’Or at the festival and won. The film tells a story of crime in Rio de Janeiro’s slums.

Two young men are arguing over money owed for drugs. One pulls out his gun and shoots the other dead before running into the favela with an associate.

It is clear that this is not the only incident where gang members are fighting and committing crimes against innocents while police fail to intervene.

City of God shows how people become desensitized to violence.
